Jeremiah 23:5-6 Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: The LORD is our righteousness.í

raise up Ö a righteous Branch

David wonít continue for ever, not as it is, clean cut off, only a stump remains, it looks dead, but there is still life, even if we canít see it, God will raise it up.

he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

Someone is in charge, even if we rebel against it. But if we rebel, we will be judged, for kings expect subjects to be subject -- that is, to obey. And while it may be that at present, lawless deeds often seem to go unpunished, in that day justice will be swift, and evil will surely be punished. In the same way that evil is punished, the good will be rewarded --it will pay to be good in that day.

Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely

So if at present you feel bullied, or that you are threatened on every side, if the future is bleak or uncertain -- a day is coming, which will bring your salvation.

this is the name by which he will be called:

How will you know it is here? Here is the name to remember, and to wait for, for good things are certainly on the way.

The LORD is our righteousness.

And this is the gospel, that is, it is the good news of our salvation. For we have tried to justify ourselves. Excuses just donít work, they donít take away our guilt and shame. Neither does putting other people down, because they fall, but it doesnít lift us up. Its not enough to be better than most, we have heard the law, and the law calls us to be perfect, just as God is perfect. So also we have learned that neither money, nor power, neither fame, nor success -- none of the worldly answers and none of the worldly treasures can give us peace of mind, and peace in our hearts.

But one has come whose name is "God Saves", we know him better as Jesus. And we have learned of all the Jesus said and taught and did. We have heard how he suffered and died on account of our sins, and having paid our debt, and freed us from sin, shame, guilt and the devil, he offers us the peace of God with passes all understanding, a full and complete pardon, forgiveness for all our sins, and he washes us, and all those troubles are washed away, forgiven and forgotten, we are made a new creation. And as a new creation we have come to know that the LORD is our righteousness. God is holy, and when God called us to be his sons and daughters, in the waters of baptism he promised us that new life, where our sins having been washed away - we are forgiven and at peace with God. God makes us holy. God makes us righteous. Jesus gives to us the righteousness He earned by keeping the law perfectly without sin. As long as we are in Christ, we are holy, we are righteous, we have peace with God.

Can we still sin? Yes. Can sin still harm us? Yes. For sin separates us from God. If we continue in sin, we continue to walk away from God, and from the life and salvation that have come to us in Jesus Christ. Why would anyone walk away from this great treasure, which is our salvation?

We may sin, but when we see it, we turn from it, and turn [return] to God, looking to the merit of Jesus Christ, and seeking forgiveness in his blood which was given and shed for us for the forgiveness of sins. We turn from sin, because we know that the only thing that can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ, is our choice, sin over salvation. The devil canít make us do it. The world canít make us do it. Nothing in all creation has the power to separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ. But why would we choose anything else, when we have forgiveness and peace with God, and everything needed already provided? So we see our sin, and turn from it, and rejoice to see and hear of our Savior, in whom we are forgiven, redeemed, and at peace.
