Exodus 19:4-6 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.
In the days before global positioning satellites, when you traveled in the wilderness, you traveled by map and compass. Taking your bearings from the landmarks on the map, you could find out where you were, and which way to go. It was easy to loose your bearing, and if you didnít keep checking by the end of the day you could be 5 miles from where you were supposed to be. That might not sound like much, but in the mountains it is the difference from finding the mountain pass, and finding the way to be impassable. In my younger days, I did quite a bit of backpacking in the wilderness, and often I would find myself at one of those places where I wished God could carry me safely to the place I was supposed to be.
I think that happens to all of us in life, not just backpackers. For it seems we all find ourselves, at times, not where we are supposed to be, and the way before us looks impassable. So we stop, and we wonder what we should do, and we turn to the Lord in prayer, and ask God to carry us on eagles wings to the place where we are supposed to be. But it never happens. It never happens because we are praying the wrong prayer, God never promises us to help us do what we want to do, or to go where we want to go. When God carries us on eagles wings, he does not carry us to the other side, so we can say thank you, and continue on our way. When God carries us on eagles wings, he carries us to Him, and all of a sudden we find ourselves in the presence of almighty God.
At times like this, to say as it were to God, I want to leave, I really donít like your company, you make me nervous. Instead of feeling honored at being invited into the presence of God, we feel uncomfortable. We feel uncomfortable because we know our heart, we know our sins, we know that we are by nature spiritually blind, dead, and enemies of God, that we deserve nothing but His wrath and punishment. We feel uncomfortable, because of our guilt, something needs to be done, to take our guilt away, and to give us peace with God.
Funny thing is that something has already been done. Jesus died for our sins. Jesus blood washes away all our guilt, and the grace of God in Jesus Christ gives us the promise of peace with God for Jesus sake. And if we do not feel secure in the grace by which we stand, in the presence of God. It is because here we stand not by our works, not by our words, but we stand by grace through faith, and that is a gift of God.
Grace is eagles wings, which carry us over what we could not pass by ourselves. Grace is being in the presence of God, without fear, because in Christ all our sins have been take away. You see it is only in the presence of God, that God reveals his plan for our lives. For in the presence of God, grace is boundless, and our faith is strengthened. So, in the presence of God we learn that God has called us to himself, to be with Him, and to keep his covenant. And it is not hard to keep the covenant of God, when you are with God, and you know that God is directing your life, and the God is providing everything necessary. After all, if by grace through faith for Jesus sake, we are Godís special treasure, what is their to fear?
And so we learn of our calling, a kingdom of priests - for our purpose is to serve God. A holy nation, for we have been called to be like our heavenly father, who is holy. So the Spirit of God is at work in our lives, help us to turn from sin, and turn to God.
But it all began, when we were lost in the wilderness, and we could not see the way, it was then that God came, and lifted us up on eagles wings and carried us to be with Him. This is the picture of salvation, God comes to us. God finds us. God lifts us out of our lost condition. God brings us safely to the right place. And when you consider all that God has done, why would you ever want to leave? So we continue in Christ, and so God has called us to work with to gather other lost souls and show them the way, the truth and the light - Jesus Christ, our Lord.
