Genesis 1:1-3 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Today is Trinity Sunday. Today we pay special attention to the one God in 3 persons. Our problem is how do we talk about it, for it is a mystery, and we do not fully comprehend how God can be one God, and at the same time, to be 3 persons. There is no analogy that works perfectly. And the chief thing all our examples do is to remind us that God is three in one. We could look at a 3 leaf clover as a symbol of God, 1 clover, 3 leaves. Sometimes we use a symbol of 3 overlapping interlocking circles to remind us of the Trinity. Sometimes we use a triangle, 3 sides, but one triangle. But they are all symbols, and the symbols have parts, but God is not parts, God is one, and at the same time God is 3 persons.

And while we could talk at some length about the nature of God, and the Trinity, the important thing is not to understand the Trinity, but to understand what God has done, and what God is doing. In the creed we talk about God according to all that he has done, so we speak of do who creates, of God who saves, and of God who brings us to faith, 3 activities, but One God.

How do we know? It wasn’t our wisdom and strength, but God in Christ came to us, revealed to us his nature and will, and brought to us salvation. Our story of God is always centered in Christ, because Christ is God made flesh, who came to save, and who reveals God and His will to us.

God has always been 1 God in 3 persons. In the Beginning, you can see God the Father, and the one creating, and yet the Spirit was hovering over the face of the Waters, and all things were made by the Word of God. When God first gave his name to man as a blessing, God said:

Num. 6:23-26 In this way ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

Again we see One God in 3 Persons.

When Jesus was Born, we see the Trinity

Luke 1:35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.

When Jesus was Baptized we see the Trinity

Matthew 3:16-17 And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

At the Crucifixion

Luke 23:46 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this he breathed his last.

At the Ascension

Matt 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."

God in Christ has worked out salvation, and has revealed who God is and what God has done. If you cannot understand the nature of the Trinity, if you cannot understand the Love of God which could do such great things, do not worry, believe. For our salvation does not rest on our understanding, or on what we have done, but salvation rests on what God in Christ has done. God sends the Spirit which works faith in our hearts, God sends the grace which forgiveness sin, do not resist the Spirit. Open your hearts and lives to live by grace through faith, in Christ Jesus.
