1 Peter 3:15 "in your hearts reverence Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence;"

Beat the drum, sound the horn, let everyone know that You are here. Step aside, I know where Iím going, and Iím going now. Take control of you life. Command your destiny. And let everyone know that, I am some body. If you donít watch out for yourself who will? You are within your rights, you are an individual. Do unto others before they can do it to you. God helps those who help themselves. You deserve it. Give yourself a treat. I know where Iím going. I am somebody. I am somebody. Are you some body too? Then join in! I am somebody! I am somebody! - stop!

If it didnít sound right, thatís because it wasnít right, but this is exactly the type of stuff we are bombarded with by the world every day. How can you resist such an onslaught, the tide surges, how can you stand firm, how can you resist being swept away?

There is an answer that is being given from a very curious quarter, one that is there, but often unheard. Have you listed to a comic in the last 10 years, the kind that stand up at tell jokes, they may show no respect, they may have reverence for nothing, often they have bad manners and use bad language, but they are standing up. They are saying I am somebody, and then they go on to explain that that while they are somebody, they really donít like who they are or what they are doing. I think thatís what makes them funny, they are saying what we feel, weíve tried to follow the way of the world, weíve tried doing everything it asked, and we are more miserable than we were at the beginning. They agree, there is a sickness in the world, but the one important thing that they are saying is that the cure, is going to kill you.

What they are saying is right, there is a sickness in the world, and they cure is going to kill you. Evil is the sickness in the world, or perhaps we ought call it sin, for the wages of sin is death, and we are all sinners. But there are 2 cures, not just one. There are 2 cures, and either one is going to kill you. And that is where Satan would have it end. Satan would have it end with, You are going to die, and continue with, so why not just hurry up and get it over with. Satan wants your death, Satan wants you in Hell, now. But there is another way, God wants you to die, to die to self, and to rise to the new life that is yours in Christ Jesus. I think thatís a big difference! If there is a thing that is killing you, why not let it die, especially since, once its dead, it no longer has power over you, when you die to sin, when you die to self, when you die to the world, they no longer have power over you, for the only thing they held over you was death. And when you die, to these your enemies, Christ is there to give you new life, for it is in Christ that we can die, and in Christ that we can rise to new life, and in Christ that we can have the victory. All these things are ours by grace through faith in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior.

But the remaining question is, if we rise to a new life, how shall we live this new life? God who gave us this new life, has provided a good shepherd to guide us, and to provide us with all that we need everyday, the first thing we need to do is to turn to him, and listen to him. The first thing is always prayer. Prayer always begins with God talking to us, and then our response to Godís grace in Jesus Christ. Hold fast to the gospel. Christ centered. Share the faith. Love the brothers. Live in Peace.

Oh, its nice to have those phrases, but how about an example? Who leads a life of "gentleness and reverence"? Who can change the world with "gentleness and reverence"? One of the examples that God offers, is that of godly women (mothers and wives). 1Peter Chapter 3 begins with how women are to live, so that by their lives and by their example, but without them ever speaking a word, their lives will show the light, life and love of Christ, and is of such a power that it could guide an unbelieving husband to faith and salvation. Thatís Power! Not even having to say a word, just the reverent behavior, and the holy life which by the grace of God communicates the whole of the message.

"Gentleness and Reverence" are not virtues that are much talked about, the world does not encourage them. It is a good thing to show respect. Jesus showed respect. It is a good thing to be gentle. Jesus was gentle, like a lamb lead to the slaughter, so Jesus offered up his life for us. And in the face of all this, the world encourages assertiveness training. The world does not want us to live Christian lives, the world does not want us to be "gentle and reverent".

"In your hearts reverence Christ as Lord," by this Peter is just encouraging us to observe the 1st petition of the Lordís Prayer - "hallowed by thy name" teach the word in truth, and live holy lives, this is how God name is hallowed among us.

"Always be prepared to make a defense ... for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence." Thank God for our mothers, who have been examples to us of how we might live lives of faith.
