John 6:66-68 After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him. Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also wish to go away?" Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life;

There is a world of people that do not know what the church has, for the church has the word and the sacraments, the means by which God gives forgiveness and eternal life to poor miserable sinners. We come to hear about Jesus, we come to hear the words of eternal life, we come to find grace and peace and hope and comfort - and having found it - we keep coming back.

However, there are still some parts of the Bible that can make us feel uncomfortable, some parts we'd rather not hear, some parts we have trouble understanding and accepting. What do I mean? Well some people have trouble accepting that God created the world in 6 days,

others have trouble with Jonah and the whale,

others find it hard to imagine how Noah could have gathered all those animals,

others find it hard to believe that trumpets could make the walls of Jericho come a tumbling down -why trouble? Because we like to ask the question: How can this be?

And if we can't understand, then we can't believe. And while we question God - we do not question the wind - we do not know where it comes from, we do not know where it goes - we cannot see it - but we cannot deny it is there.

There are some people who wonder why some people have these problems, its simple, they say - God said it, I believe it, that settles it. And while they have no trouble with Jonah, or Noah or Joshua - and yet they have trouble that God says, be ye perfect,

or that God says, love your neighbor,

or obey your parents,

or because God forgives,

or that some people could be saved at the very end of life, because salvation is not earned, it is a gift.

Have you ever thought as to what it means; "you have the words of eternal life"

We have the Bible, we have the words of eternal life, it is a gift of God

What do you do with it?

3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

5:39 You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness to me;

6:40 For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

6:54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

6:68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life;

10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

10:28 and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand.

20:31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.
