Matthew 13:27-28 And the servants of the householder came and said to him, Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then has it weeds? He said to them, An enemy has done this.
God sows good seed, and in a perfect world, that would be the end. The seed that God sows would grow, bear fruit, and be harvested. But ever since sin entered into the world, things have not been perfect. Ever since sin, there have been weeds, the also grow, and bear fruit, but that fruit is not good. When the harvest is near, then you can tell the difference between the good fruit and the evil fruit, and since it is so late, there is nothing to be done but wait till the harvest, lest in pulling the weeds, you also pull out some of the wheat.
We don't like to see weeds in the field, and we think we ought to do something about it, but sometimes there is nothing we can do. We don't like to see hypocrites in the church, we think we ought to do something, but sometimes there is nothing we can do. In this life, just as there are weeds among the wheat, just as there are hypocrites among the faithful; so also, do we find that we are mixed. On the one hand by the grace of God, we are the children of God; and on the other hand, by our reason and strength we are poor miserable sinners. And we will remain mixed until the end of the age.
God sows in us the good seed, that is, faith. The devil also sows seed, they are the cares of the world, the desires for riches, and all the other temptations to sin. By ourselves there would be no choice, but by the grace of God we have been baptized, and been given a new life. Each day it is important that we remember our baptism, and drown the old sinful nature and rise to the new life that is ours in Christ.
We will never be perfect, this side of heaven - but that's not the question. The question is what are we growing into? And this question is not something we ask about others, we ask it about ourselves. If we are not growing in faith, love and service; if we are not growing in the Word and grace of God, then not only are we not growing, but in a real sense we are dying - if we are not rooted in the word, how can we be fed, and nourished - and so it is that many whither and die, for they have cut themselves off from the source of life, which is Christ.
Now, it might not appear we are dying, for when we are not growing in Christ, we are still growing, but we are growing in sin, evil and wickedness - and even though nothing happens, the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God, but at the harvest, they will be gathered to be burned.
So what should we do? Same thing as always, Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand. So we turn from sin and turn to God, and God forgives us our sins and washes away our iniquity and we are a new creation. That new creation, by grace through faith, is the good seed, that bears good fruit, that leads to life everlasting. Grow in the new life that is ours in Christ. Grow in the grace of God through word and sacrament.
Grow in hope, don't let the world, the flesh or the devil choke out the hope that is yours in Christ. Grow in the Word, the it fill your life, and guide your steps. Grow in faith, know that all things are possible with God, and remember how he supplies us each day with all we need to sustain this body and life. And as your grow in the Word, you will also grow in the love of God, which passes all understanding, and God's love will keep you in faith unto life everlasting.
