John 14:20-21 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him."

Rules are necessary for people to live together in peace. Rules are the second thing that we learn in our families, for the very first thing we learn is love. After we learn love, then we come to learn the rules of our family, how we are to live together in peace. We don't learn them all at once, but they come, little by little. First we learn not to throw our food, then we learn other things that we should or should not do and in time we learn that there are things which are expected of us, such as to pick up our toys, to make our bed, to clean our room, to wash the dishes, to mow the yard, to work in the garden. Parents teach these things to their children, in part because they expect great things, and learning the basics is a step in the right direction. Parents teach these things to their children, not because it is easy, but because they love them - we know that if we are loved we will be taught discipline, because our parents care and want the best for us.

So our parents also teach us about God and his love, and after we know about God's love, they teach us that God has a plan for our lives, and they teach us the 10 commandments, because these are God's rules on how we are to live as the family of God, because by grace through our baptism we have become the children of God.

The question we want to examine today is, why do we keep the commandments? There are 2 answers as to why we keep the commandments, one is out of the fear of punishment, and it is a good reason to keep the commandments - but even if it is the right thing to do, it is not something which brings peace - for you are never certain what happens if you don't keep the commandments perfectly, and that fear eats us from the inside.

The second reason to keep the commandments is because of love. If we know the love of God that is ours in Jesus Christ, and how he conquered sin death and the devil - how we are given the forgiveness of sins and everlasting life - if we remember how we were made a new creation, and how we became a child of God - if we remember how God has given us our daily bread, and filled our life with good things - then to show our love of the God who has done so much for us, done it while we were still sinners - then we say in our heart, how can I show God how much I love him, and the answer comes to us with the same certainty as we know how to please our parents, for just as they taught us the rules of the house, so they taught us God's rules, the 10 commandments

So what is the benefit of showing our love for God and keeping the commandments

Without faith -

With faith - God makes himself known to us and we have the peace of God
