Isaiah 9:2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.

Light is a good thing, without it, we stumble, fall and cannot find our way. Who wants to be lost? While there are places people pay to go through a maze – I don’t think is because they want to be lost – rather they want to feel the victory of finding their own way – its relatively safe, if you did get lost someone would rescue you. Its one thing to be lost for fun – its another thing to really be lost, no sense of direction – and there is that great fear, that you will never find your way home.

Light is a good thing, perhaps the first night light we hear of in the Bible was the pillar of fire that guided the Israelites at night during the Exodus, it also kept them safe. In the Psalms we often speak of God lightening the darkness, and we also speak of God as my light and my salvation. We want to walk in the light of the Lord, we desire to live in the light of God’s countenance, that is God’s smiling face. We know that Jesus came as a light unto the nations. We are told to arise and shine for our light has come.

Numbers 24:17 "a star shall come forth out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel."

We are not told how it was the shepherds found the place where Jesus was born – but we are told how it is that the Wisemen find the place – they have seen a star, and they followed it.

It is good for us to remember the Christmas star, that God sends the light that will guide us also to the Savior. But as great as the Christmas star is, it is not important in itself – its importance is because of what it point to – for in points us to our Savior.

Our Savior is the great light – he came giving sight to the blind, bring good news to the poor, and setting the captives free.

Since we are all sinners, since by our sins we were held in bondage to the world, our flesh and the devil – not only do we need the light, not only do we need good news, but we need a savior who can free us, a savior who can give forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. He has come.

By grace through faith we have been changed, since Christ is the light of the world, we are lamps that carry this light, we bring good news to those who still sit in darkness, we point them to the Savior, we tell them how he came for us, and came for all – this is the good news of Christmas, so may we all shine like stars with the love of God which is ours in Jesus Christ.
