Luke 16:31 He said to him, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.

What’s the point? The point is that God wants all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth and has done everything necessary to bring this about. The problem is that some will perish. The question is who are you?

This is not a question of rich or poor, Lazarus was not saved because he was poor, nor was he saved because he had suffered. We know that salvation is always by grace through faith in Christ. Faith grasps hold of the promise of God, God gives the faith that enables us to receive the forgiveness of sins and everlasting life. God works such faith through the word. What did we learn? "Blessed is he who hears the word of God and keeps it." The word works faith in our heart, and faith works in us a new creation, and it is living as the new creation, the child of God that we have the grace given to keep the word.

So, what about the rich man? He was not damned because he was rich. He was not damned because he failed to show mercy. He was damned because he did not allow the word to work faith in his heart and make him a new creation. Because he did not hear the word of God, he did not know the love of God, otherwise he would have shown mercy to the poor man.

You see, the point of the story is that God has had mercy on us. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son to suffering and death, that all who believe might be saved. Jesus died to pay for our sins. Jesus died to forgive our ins. Jesus rose from the dead that he might give to us everlasting life. Not only do we have the word of God, but Jesus is risen from the dead, and still many do not believe.

They say, yeah, and so what else is new, make it exciting, make it interesting, make it entertaining. Sometimes that seems reasonable to us -–the problem is, that if they do not hear the word, and are not convinced because someone has risen from the dead, these things will not convince them either.

We live in a time when many people say that the word of God is boring. We live in a time when many people do not believe what the word of God says. Many people believe that you can do whatever you want, that you only have to believe what is reasonable, that you can pick and choose which parts you want. Who will warn such people that they do not end up in Hell?

Yes, hell is real, the torment is everlasting, and there is no relief. And while they say that misery loves company, hell is so bad, that if they could the people in hell would warn their friends and relatives to repent while there is yet time. But they cannot bring this message. Who can? We can. And that is why we are here. We can carry this message.
