Mark 6:31 And he said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.

In the fifth petition of the Lord’s Prayer, we pray "Give us this day our daily bread." We know that God gives daily bread, even to the wicked, without our prayer, but we pray that we might receive it with thanksgiving. We also know that daily bread includes everything necessary to support this body and life. Everything necessary – have you ever given thought to just what that means?

What is necessary? We live in a complex world, and it is hard to keep organized. But there are skills we learn in school, and school has changed over the years – a long time ago, a student would have clay tablets, then there was progress at we had slates, years passed at there were binders with ruled paper, and now we live in the days of the trapper. I guess the point is once you’ve got things organized you’ve got to keep it that way. But sometimes I wonder if perhaps we aren’t a bit too organized? And I wonder if perhaps some of ‘our" organization isn’t anything more than a trap. We have a lot of labor saving devices, and yet the more we have, the less time it seems we have – is there something wrong with this picture? Have you ever seen someone with a pager, and a cell phone, a personal assistant and a day planner - - in a fishing boat? Have you ever heard someone who is retired talking about how they are too busy?

While there seems to be varied opinion on most things these days, the one thing people seem united in, is in their agreement that the institution of slavery is wrong. And yet, it seems that most people are enslaved, if not to people, certainly to the things of life. God agrees that it is not good to be enslaved, and when God have the 10 commandments in Deuteronomy, he adds to the 3rd commandment - "You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out thence with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day."

We are assured, by the promise of God, that we still need that rest and that that rest is there – Heb 4:9 - So then, there remains a sabbath rest for the people of God;

But our text today is not about the sabbath, it is just about rest – you might call this the vacation text, things had been very busy, much work was done – and it seemed that the work was inescapable – so Jesus, seeing the need of his disciples said – come away with me to a quiet place.

We look to Jesus for rest and peace and all good things, indeed such things are covered when we pray the Lord’s prayer.

Day planner = bible

Cellular phone = prayer

Grace = Gods’ plan for our lives

Peace = knowing that God is in control

Mercy = our sins are forgiven

Perhaps rather than taking a vacation from God, we need instead to take a vacation with God.
