Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Palm Sunday is a good time to ask the question – Can you see your King? It is a good time, because the thing is coming. What do you see, what are your plans? Even the tax collector, Zaccheaus had plans – he knew he was short, he ran ahead and climbed a tree. In other words, there are things that can get in the way of seeing the king – how do you plan to deal with that?

It would seem that the first task, is to find out what the obstacles might be, then we can plan on what to do about them. How do you find the obstacles? One way, is to ask yourself – if you don’t see Jesus, what do you see? Problem is that we are not always honest with ourselves, and sometimes we are deceived. So, sometimes it is necessary to go another route.

There are 2 popular tools that the world uses to help us see what is important. The first is phrased in various ways – but the basic question comes down to this – if you could only save 3 things out of your whole life, what would they be? Every one has a different list, because everyone has different priorities. But the one thing the list can tell you, is what is important to you – even the world thinks this is important.

The second tool is framed in the story of Aladdin and his magic lamp – you get 3 wishes – what do you wish for? That will also tell you what is important to you.

There is a third tool, which the world know about, but it doesn’t make much use of it – it also will tell you what you think is important – but it does more – it will also show you the obstacles that might keep you from seeing the King. It is the 10 commandments – and if you use them to examine yourself, you will see your sins, you will learn about temptation – and you will also see your king – and chances are that our king is not Jesus – for the 10 commandments will show us that there is something else that is more important, something else we want more – something else that we would do just about anything to see. It is this sin, which is our God, our King, our Lord and which keeps us bound so that we cannot see Jesus.

And that is why the world does not make us of the 10 commandments, except as the title to a movie – because the first thing the 10 commandments do, is to show us our sin – but our sin is also the chief obstacle, when it comes to seeing Jesus. The problem is that we cannot, like Zaccheaus climb a tree, as though climbing to our Savior. In fact, climbing the tree didn’t even work that well for Zaccheaus, sure, he did get to see Jesus – but that wasn’t what made the difference – what made the difference is that Jesus found Zaccheaus, Jesus came to him.

For while the law shows us our sins, and shows us our need for the Savior, it is only the Gospel which can bring us peace, forgiveness and salvation. It is the gospel which has the power to overcome every obstacle, every temptation – because the Gospel is the power of God working through his word for the salvation of the world.

How do we know that this is central? Because if the task before us, is to Behold our king! Then it is only the law which can show us the false king, our sin, and how it has us bound and in chains. It shows us that we cannot save ourselves. It shows us that we need a savior. It is then, seeing our sins, seeing the need for a savior – that we can see the true king – righteous and having salvation – it is only then we can join in the sound of rejoicing, using that word that describes our hope- Hosanna! Which being translated, means – Save us Now!

So it is that we examine ourselves, and then Jesus comes to us, under the bread and wine. the body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins.
