John 1:9-12 The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believe in his name, he gave power to become children of God;
Who are the children of God? The Jews think that they are the children of God, they are children of Abraham, God made a promise to Abraham, therefore God owes us something too. It is interesting that many of the Arabs also claim to be children of Abraham, they also call on God to settle their disputes. And sometimes, when children are fighting, parents would just as soon not claim any of their offspring. But the problem in our text, is not a parent who disowns his children, but children who disown their parents. God comes, and his people just don’t have time for him, evidently there are other things which are more important.
So, what was important about Christmas? Yes, that was it, Jesus came to be our Savior. And its not just that he came, but he came to our homes, to live in our heart. Jesus came, but when he got to many houses this year, no one would answer the door – and sometimes, the door would be answered, but there would be no welcome- sorry, we just don’t have any more time – or any more room.
But there were some who did receive him, they opened the door, they welcomed him in – that is what baptism is all about, welcoming Jesus… NO – baptism is not so much about what we do, but about what God does – God washes away our sins, God makes us a new creation, God makes us children of God, God prepares a place in heaven for us.
But it doesn’t stop there, its not once you receive Jesus, once you are baptized into the Christian faith – that you have a get out of Hell free card, to use if you should ever need it. Its not like an insurance policy – something that it would be better to have, just in case.
You see, while it is important to receive Jesus when he comes – for we do need the gifts he offers – it is important that we continue in faith – that we keep on believing – day after day, week after week, year after year.
We see plenty of people who used to believe, but there is little evidence that it has any room in their lives today. May this never happen to us.
